Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine that uses very fine, sterile needles inserted into specific points on the body. These points stimulate the body’s natural healing response, helping to restore balance, reduce pain, and improve overall well-being.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most patients are pleasantly surprised to find that acupuncture is not painful. The needles are extremely thin—much finer than a typical injection needle. You may feel a slight pinch or tingling sensation when the needle is inserted, followed by a sense of relaxation or gentle heaviness. Many patients even fall asleep during their treatments.
What conditions can acupuncture help with?
Acupuncture is a comprehensive healthcare system that supports most conditions and health issues, including but not limited to:
Pain relief (back, neck, joints, headaches, arthritis)
Stress, anxiety, depression, grief, worry and sleep issues
Women’s health and fertility support
Hormonal balance, menstrual cycle regularity, perimenopause and menopause
Digestive health
Headaches, dizziness and vertigo
Allergies and seasonal concerns
Cardiovascular and circulatory health
Neurological conditions, dementia, stroke
Autoimmune and endocrine issues
Overall wellness and immune support
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. When performed by a licensed acupuncturist, acupuncture is very safe. The needles used are sterile, single-use, and FDA-approved. Side effects are rare and usually mild, such as slight redness or temporary soreness at the needle site.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. Some people notice significant improvements after just one or two treatments, while others may require a series of weekly or bi-weekly sessions for long-term results. Your practitioner will create a personalized treatment plan for you.
Once you have experienced sustained improvement, monthly is a great maintenance frequency to keep improving your health and any patterns of imbalance while staying ahead of symptoms that may crop up.
What should I expect at my first appointment?
During your first visit, we’ll review your health history, discuss your goals, and create a customized treatment plan. The acupuncture session itself usually lasts 20-30 minutes. Most patients leave feeling relaxed, refreshed, and balanced.
What should I do before and after treatment?
Before: Eat a light meal (don’t arrive on an empty stomach), wear loose-fitting clothing, and avoid caffeine or alcohol.
After: Drink plenty of water, rest if you feel tired, avoid strenuous activity that day, and allow your body to integrate the treatment.
What is your cancellation policy?
We request as much notice as you can give us so we can fill our practitioners’ openings. If you cancel in less than 48 hours, you will be billed a cancellation fee of 50% the treatment cost.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We prefer payment by cash, credit, debit and flex/health savings account card. We also accept checks if the other forms of payment are not available.
Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
That depends on your insurance policy. When you call your insurance company, it is usually a straightforward answer as they are likely to cover a certain number of treatments if it is covered at all.
If your insurance covers acupuncture, you will still be responsible for payment in full at the time of your treatment as we do not process insurance claims. However, we are happy to provide superbills, detailed statements that include your diagnosis and procedure codes, so that you may be reimbursed by your insurance company. The rate at which your insurance company will cover treatment and reimburse you is up to them.
Do you sell gift certificates?
